    • The Boston Globe summer intern program began more than 50 years ago as an opportunity for college students interested in journalism to gain practical experience at a major news organization.

The largest group of interns reports on local and regional news across New England as general assignment reporters — working on both breaking news for our Express Desk and longer daily and non-daily stories for our Super Department. Other intern reporters cover sports, living/arts or business news. We also have intern positions in the Photography and Editorial Design departments, and on the News copy desk.

Internships are NOT limited to journalism majors. ELIGIBLE: All students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program or those who will be graduating in May or June 2020, as well as journalism graduate school students who have NOT had professional journalism experience.

An aptitude for journalism is the most important qualification for this internship. However, a previous internship is recommended. Applicants must have a driver’s license and should be comfortable driving.

Summer interns work as full-time employees for 12 weeks, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Interns are paid a weekly wage, and shifts vary. There are weekly critique sessions for the reporting interns, and lively weekly discussions with editors and staff members on a range of issues and topics pertaining to journalism.

Contact Paula Bouknight at Paula.bouknight@globe.com. After Sept. 1, application forms can be downloaded from our website: www.bostonglobe.com/newsintern.

    • The Charlotte Observer, the largest newspaper in the Carolinas, is accepting applications for 2020 newsroom summer internships.

From Day 1 of your internship, you will be welcomed as part of The Charlotte Observer staff. We expect our interns to function as beginning professionals from their first day: that is, to report or shoot video for stories ready to be edited for digital and print publication.

Our summer learning program – Observer U – includes weekly seminars in which experienced reporters and editors discuss such topics such as reporting and writing news stories, researching public documents, shooting video on deadline assignments and understanding libel law. Each intern works with a mentor and can expect regular feedback and side-by-side editing. We are committed to helping you develop as a journalist.

Some paid summer internships are available. We also have several academic interns each year. These students receive college credit or academic consideration for working here. To be eligible, a candidate must provide written authorization they’ll receive credit or recognition from the college.

We prefer to hire rising seniors, but students at all levels of college are eligible. We prefer candidates who’ve worked a previous internship at a daily newspaper. A journalism major is not required.

A car is required. Interns must pass a drug test before they can begin work.

To apply, please email your application to Gary Schwab, the editor in charge of interns, at gschwab@charlotteobserver.com

    • The Chicago Tribune’s newsroom internship program seeks college juniors, seniors and graduate students for 12-week paid internships. Opportunities will be considered in all newsroom departments:  metro, sports, business, graphics, copy editing, design, photo/video, entertainment, events, social media and lifestyle.

To be eligible, candidates must have completed at least one internship at a daily news organization other than their college paper.  Additionally, candidates must be able to work in the United States legally.  Interns will work 40 hours a week and must be able to, and often do, cover major stories their first days on the job.

Send your cover letter, resume, work examples and the names of at least two professional and one school references to internships@chicagotribune.com.  Limit your clips to five to seven pieces that represent your best work and show your range of experience. We prefer that candidates send clips or links to specific stories rather than linking to a personal website. Clips give us a chance to see what you believe is your best work. If you do send a link to your personal website, consider putting your best, most recent work at the top.

In your cover letter, please specify whether you’re interested in a fall, winter, spring or summer internship and specify whether you are seeking a reporting, editing, photography, design or other type of internship.

Deadlines: The deadline for the highly competitive metro summer reporting internship is Nov. 1. There is no deadline for internships in other departments or for other seasons of the year. However, the earlier you apply, the more internships you will be considered for. It is not uncommon for students to apply in October for an internship the following summer, and we hire many of our summer interns in January and February.

    • Internships are a great example of Mermaid Society SMTX’s philosophy. The creation of a year-round internship program with Texas State University students who want to be part of the on-going development work for Mermaid Week SMTX is mutually beneficial. Students will have opportunity to apply their knowledge in various capacities throughout the year to gain hands on experience, develop skills, make connections, strengthen their resumes, learn about a field, and assess their interest and abilities.

Developing opportunities through the Mermaid Society SMTX initiative encourages synergy between students and local community, which is vital to creating an environmentally conscience culture. Students participating in this internship program can be a member of the Mermaid Society SMTX’ Advisory Committee. Members of this committee are a diverse group of stakeholders citywide representing both public and private associations.

Students will be part of the conversations that address the stewardship of our river and enhance the arts and cultural profile of our city. Interns must be dedicated, and bring a high level of creativity, energy and vision to play a leadership role. We would anticipate opportunities for students from a variety of fields of study. Mermaid Society is an approved site for the 'work-study program' at Texas State University.   Our long range planning includes paid internship opportunities, but for now students will receive "hands-on" experience from event planning to child education.
