Journalism
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers a Bachelor’s of Science degree in journalism as well as a minor in journalism. Journalism majors take a variety of courses designed to provide core skills necessary for the field as well as courses designed to meet individualized interests.
All journalism majors and journalism minors are required to take MC1313: Media Writing, which teaches basic media writing with a focus on digital skills. as well as multicultural competencies as they relate to journalism. From there, required courses build on the core skills of media writing and add visual skills. Students also have the option of pursuing a 9-hour concentration in Sports Media.
Students who elect not to pursue a concentration are free to select courses from across the mass communication curriculum to build a portfolio catering to individualized interests. Students are encouraged to explore individual courses in digital media, visual journalism, various writing genres, public relations, advertising or international communications.
Faculty in the journalism program bring a blend of professional and academic experience to the classroom. Working journalists serve as part-time faculty to maintain a connection to the profession.

Internships & Campus Media
Journalism majors are encouraged to seek internships but are not required to do so. The school’s internship coordinator maintains relationships with employers offering internships and provides guidance in seeking internships.
Campus media outlets also provide valuable practical experience. Students may work at campus media outlets The University Star and KTSW-FM 89.9 radio on a volunteer basis, for course credit or as a student media employee.
